Halloween/October Decks for Darker Days

October carries such a noticeably unique vibe and so I’m often drawn to work with different tools and touch on different subjects than I normally might.

For instance, there are some tarot/oracle decks that I only use during this month. And then there are some which I don’t touch at all, and others where I increase their frequency of use.

Below are a list of all my personal decks that I lean on during this transitional period and following that, I’ll make mention of other Halloween/October-esque decks that were recommended by the community of witches, mystics and seekers on Instagram.

Second Impressions of My Very First Tarot Deck

Approximately 23 years ago, I picked up my very first tarot deck. I had wanted one for awhile but being 10 or 11 at the time, all I had was my weekly allowance which was painful to try to save. Also, I felt a bit weird and out of my element in terms of actually going in to make such a purchase on my own, so I asked my dad to buy it for me instead. I should say that my dad was an astrologer and the house was littered with oddities so, this really wasn't such a weird request in that context. I think some parents may be caught off guard, but the request really produced no different a reaction than if I would have asked for a pack of gum. So at the time, it all felt kind of normal even though I also had a sense that maybe it wasn't. Well, I must have had some sense that it wasn't what my peers were doing, because I kept it a secret from most people, as I did many aspects of my spirituality growing up, but that's a whole other topic.

The Art of Selection

The process of selecting a deck (whether it’s your 1st or 100th) is a unique one and I can’t say with certainty, what will or won’t work for you. Heck, I don’t always know the best way to approach it for myself! I’ve purchased decks on a whim that left me gobsmacked by the beauty of the few cards I could see only to unwrap them and feel much less dazzled if not down right disconnected. I’ve also made spur of the moment purchases where the deck didn’t strike me as something that I would normally be drawn to, but when I get them home, I’m pleasantly surprised at just how well our energies work together. Perhaps this is where “gut selection” comes into play. So the preliminary moral of the story is, prepare to be surprised either way if you’re making a purchase on the fly!
