Notes From The Macrocosm

I posted nothing with the exception of a playlist in the month of January, and even though this is unusual for me, I also know enough at this point to trust in my ebbs and flows. While my blog has arguably suffered from inactivity, I’ve been in greater creative throws where other endeavors are concerned. And through that, I’ve had some time to reflect and pay attention to the reminders that universe or spirit or whatever has been graciously sending my way.

Here’s what I’ve learned or what has been reinforced through the month of January. Maybe you’ll find some pieces relateable, maybe a light-bulb will go off, or maybe you’ll completely disagree and leave an angry message in the comments. I don’t know, let’s go!

Meet Your Spirit Guide - A 31 Day Challenge To Bridge The Connection

In 2016 I ran a challenge on social media called Meet Your Spirit Guide. In the short span of a month, I watched as hundreds of connections formed across the globe between us and our guides who tirelessly cheer us on.

It was eye opening and fun as hell and in January 2019, as a way to kick off the New Year, I’ve decided to bring it back!

I’ve changed up some of the prompts and so I hope some of you who joined in 2016 are keen to dive back in next month. Because we have such vast teams and because 2 years has passed, it’s likely you’ll connect with a new guide this round.

After the cut, you’ll see a full list of prompts. There are some that may benefit from a bit more explanation and so I will be very active posting to my stories on Instagram to add context to what we’re exploring. There is NO guidebook with this one and so while there is so much to say on the topic, I also want to keep it simple!

Tarot Intention Kits

Next to divining with tarot, my second favorite way to use the cards is ritualistically. Call it magick, manifestation, intention setting - whatever. The cards are not just gateways to what will be, or what is - they are portals to possibilities.

I’ve been working with tarot in this way for years, making changes in my life, sometimes even enormous ones. For this reason, I can’t underestimate the power that comes from working with these archetypes and symbols in this way.

I’ve also been feeling super crafty lately, needing to get my hands dirty in tangible magick, and so I began creating intention kits. These kits utilize tarot and crystal energy to help you both formulate and breath life into your desires.

An Online Seth Intensive

Well before I launched this website, far before I began speaking freely and openly about my passions and practices, I was a student on endless quests to satisfy my curiosities surrounding things I couldn't see but, but only felt. One of my earliest teachers was a series of books by author Jane Roberts introduced to me by my dad. This collection of channeled texts was my very first foray into some of the biggest question marks around this existence, consciousness and the nature of reality.

Learning To Read Tarot

I recently watched a video by the ever fascinating Kelly Ann Maddox around the ways in which people approach their learning of tarot. There has been some contention in the community, which I've opted not to comment on, regarding certification and whether or not it's necessary or whatever. I'm not here to tell you how to learn tarot. But if you're asking me, no, I don't think certification is necessary. No, I don't plan on ever being certified to read cards. But, I also don't care what other people do with their money and am happy for those who chose this route and those who chose to supply it as an option. It's not necessary, but it may be the right thing for some and there is nothing wrong with that.

And this all made me think back to my own journey with the cards. How did I come into it? What were my struggles? And how did I ultimately come to understand them in the way I do today? The truth is, I don't remember how tarot specifically landed on my radar, but I grew up in a home that was very open to these sorts of things and so when I requested a deck, around the age of 10, it was met with a swift visit to the book store to peruse what was available.

Dream States: The Space Between Sleep

Sleep is a funny thing. We all do it and yet, we never really regularly compare notes. Growing up, I assumed my experiences with sleep and dreams were the same as everyone else's. I'm not saying they weren't, for the most part, but it's hard to distinguish what is common with what is perhaps more unusual if the experience is everyday (or, every night as this topic would have it).

Dreams for me have forever been a spiritual experience. I was always curious about this state and thought a lot about my adventures upon waking. Even as a kid, I'd wonder what they meant and dig for hidden context. In this post, I'm going to highlight various dream states that I personally experience, and provide my thoughts both on what they mean, how they can be achieved (if desired) and what to do with them once you're there.

Say What!? When The Cards Disappoint

When reading for oneself, you will inevitably come into a situation where the cards deliver a message that's difficult to swallow. Usually I'm pretty chill about these occurrences, so the other day, when I decide to do a simple reading checking in on a certain something, I thought it would be fine. My question was straightforward: What advice did spirit have for me regarding the situation and what would the outcome be if I heeded the advice? No big deal, right? - Wrong. I was already more invested in this outcome than I cared to admit, and so when the first card I turned over was the ever blunt "Not For You" from the Wisdom of the Oracle, I was taken a back.

What do you mean, "Not For You"? I've already decided this is for me though, I just wanted some simple advice on next steps! Usually I'm not so surprised by the cards. Usually I have a pretty good handle on things and set my expectations accordingly, but today - today, I was simply not prepared.

How Does Tarot Work? I Don't Know, But I Have 4 Theories!

Maybe you've been reading the cards awhile or perhaps you just started - whatever boat you're in, have you ever stopped to consider why or how the cards work? The truth is, no one can tell you for certain, but I have a few theories which we'll get to in a moment! In fact, I believe all of the following ideas to be contributing factors as to why/how a tarot reading works. This means that there doesn't have to be just one answer and it also means that this is in no way a conclusive list. These theories may ring true for you or you may have your own ideas that explain how tarot works and that is all perfectly acceptable and valid.

So, without further ado, I'll now present you with 4 reasons that may explain why/how tarot works.

The Riddle That's Defining My Focus

If you've been following me on Instagram, you may already know that I've been grappling with a shift that's been persistent and apparent since Mercury Retrograde began. It's honestly making me question everything - and because it's not let up over the course of the last couple weeks, I know it's not as simple as a fleeting thought. In fact, what it's bringing up for me are things that have been bubbling in the background for awhile now. Specifically, it's making me hyper aware and also critical of the cycles I've been experiencing that I've ignored up until this point to which I can ignore no longer. I'm being asked to slow down and reassess. To revisit and refocus and that brings me to this; the riddle that's been ruling my existence since that second week in August.

Connecting with the Solar Eclipse In Leo

Tomorrow is the much anticipated Solar Eclipse in Leo and depending where you are in this world, you may experience total-partial darkness for a brief period of time.

Solar eclipses are relatively rare and when they show up, it's a good time for us to take a peek at what's lurking in our shadows and what is attempting to find its way to light. It's also an opportunity to allow for some serious transformation to take place and depending where this eclipse is landing for you in your chart, it could mean a focus on different things.

To figure out where the eclipse is showing up for you, you need to locate what house Leo lands on in your natal chart. You can run a chart over at Cafe Astrology, which is an excellent resource that I use frequently since I'm definitely no Astrology expert. Once you've run your chart, scroll down to the bottom and find what house Leo falls in for you. There are 12 houses total and I've included a list below so you can reference what each of them means. Please note that I've included the natural sign that occupies each house to provide more context to that house, but your natal chart will show you specifically where the signs are landing for you.

May I Recommend...

This Mercury Retrograde has really hit me like a ton of bricks. I had been full steam, Chariot ahead on a couple of projects when WHAM - the need to recede overcame me. Well, as you can probably tell blog posts here have slowed...and time between Instagram posts has increased. So, what have I been up to then? Mostly, taking time for myself. Reassessing what it is that I'm creating and putting into the world. Feeding myself with things that are inspiring and helping me feel sane during this downtime.

In fact, here are a handful of those very things that I've been indulging in, enjoying or have otherwise found some joy or comfort in this last week.

Adventures in Instagram as a Soulpreneur

When I started my Instagram account in November of 2015, it was before Spiral Sea Tarot (website, brand etc.) had really taken shape and I had no clear objective or expectation going in. At the same time, I ran a personal Instagram account where I interacted mainly with my friends IRL. But, it was a weird time for me. I’d spent the last year or so in the process of reevaluating my spirituality and finding more ways to incorporate it into my life; getting back in touch with something I'd lost somewhere along the way. The problem was, I didn’t feel comfortable to share that with most people and every time I wanted to post a picture of an incredible spread I’d just done or a passage from a book with an unconventional topic - I felt a lot of reservation. But, I knew I wanted to take pictures of the things I loved and I knew I wanted to share those things with...someone. And so, in secret, I started a second account - now the one and only account I use today.

Why a secret? To test the waters. To provide myself an outlet that felt safe. To share without filter or fear. I suppose those would be a few good reasons. Once I was sure I wanted to have this space where I could creatively explore what I was most passionate about, I shared it with a few - mainly because it felt weird to have this side thing that no one knew about and ultimately I knew I needed to transition myself more fully.

Now that I’ve been doing this for over a year and a half, I wanted to reflect back on what I’ve learned through the process of showing up everyday in this capacity. So without further ado, below are the biggest lessons I've so far come by while using Instagram as a soulpreneur.

5 Really Good Reasons To Get A Tarot Reading

Obviously no one *needs* a tarot reading, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get one anyway. We don't need lots of things, but there are still ways in which we will benefit immensely from certain "non-essentials". Ways that promote personal growth, provide clarity and give guidance at any juncture. I'm definitely not of the mindset that you need to check in with tarot for every curious little thought that crosses your mind, but here are 5 really good reasons for consulting a reader if you want to get the most of this powerful tool.

Post Edit: I came back and revised this to add a bonus 6th really REALLY good reason. Check it out after the cut!

Why I No Longer Price My Readings Based On Card Count

When I began charging for readings, I structured my offerings by basing the cost of the reading on the number of cards expected to be drawn. I rolled this way for many many months until I began to meet some resistance and frustration over the process. What if I wanted to draw more cards? What if it turns out, I had the answer in just a couple cards? What if half of the input came straight from spirit and the cards were more supplementary? For my style of reading, the whole process was just too restrictive and unnatural and that's not fair - not for my clients and not for me.

It occurred to me then that this structure was no longer working. My readings needed to be priced based on type and my experience with those types, which helped inform what the price point should be. Why does this structure work better for me and my clients? Let me provide you some rationale!
