Soundtrack Through The Arcana - The Moon

When I first started this series (too damn long ago) there were some cards that I immediately knew how to associate. The Moon was one of those cards. I picked Running With The Wolves in the first week I conceived of this series and my mind hasn't been swayed away since.

Have a listen to the track or entire playlist after the cut!

We often turn to the cards to tell us what we need to know, but through a different lens, the cards can serve as a reflection - a mirror - or a tool for us to deep dipper and ask questions rather than seek answers.

This can be especially helpful if you draw a card that you’re having difficulty deciphering. Consider that you have blind spots. Consider that you come at the cards with bias and unknowing. We only see what we are ready to see and when the cards aren’t “clear” it could be because we aren’t in a place to receive what’s being offered. Then what? Whether I’m reading for myself or others, in these moments I often pause and rephrase the advice I wish I could reach as a question not yet uncovered. This is especially true if a card seems particularly out of place in the reading. Maybe that oddly placed Emperor showing up in a reading about love isn’t saying your relationship is rigid but rather, is asking you in what ways do you build walls or conversely, not create boundaries clearly enough?

New Moon in Cancer - A Playlist

Okay so, it's been a month since I've made a post. In fact, my last post was a playlist like this to honour the new moon in Gemini. The reason for this is that the last month has been terribly (but also wonderfully) illuminating, and through that...illumination...I've had to uncomfortably examine some things including the type of content I have produced over the last few years and the direction I'd like to go. I hate hate hate making bold claims about where things are headed at the start of a journey - it's a progress killer. Everything will unfold organically and in time, but I'm approaching things slower and more mindfully.

Blah blah blah here is a playlist, after the cut, packed full of jams to honour this new (or dark) moon in Cancer. Please enjoy!

New Moon in Gemini - A Playlist

The New Moon (or Dark Moon to be more precise) in Gemini occurs on the 13th and so I've compiled a group of songs that I felt captured the essence of that energy. Or more accurately, I put a bunch of songs together that I liked that I thought kind of fit the bill. I was going to try to be clever and do a full playlist of duos or featurings, but...whatever. Check it out after the cut!

Charting Our Dreams

A few weeks ago I posted a dream-states survey and invited those who wished to partake to share their experiences. I received quite a number back and would like to start this by offering a heart felt thank you. Not only was I in awe of the feedback, but I felt a great sense of comfort knowing that this world I escape to each night is not mine alone.

With all that being said, I spent a great deal of time pouring over the participant's birth charts because I wanted to see if there were a few areas in particular where I could draw commonalities. Astrology is complex, and I am not an expert by a long stretch - but it was fascinating none the less. Unfortunately, based on the sample size I viewed, I couldn't conclude any obvious parallels, but I would like to explain what it was I was looking for. Before I do that, let me share with you some of the fascinating experiences some of our dreamers put forth. I've just included one or two quotes for each topic and I've added my own input as well.

Soundtrack Through The Arcana - The Star

After the rubbly, dusty destruction of The Tower, The Star makes its appearance as a reminder that not all hope is lost. The song I've chosen is really beautiful to me. It has a bit of an air of sadness, or maybe it's just contemplation or this sense that even if something lacks meanings, it's still somehow valuable and real.

Anyway, this is coming at an opportune time for me because if there is one thing I need right now, it's to know that everything is going to be okay. If you stumble across this post, positive thoughts and vibes are much appreciated!

New Moon in Taurus - A Playlist

The New Moon (or Dark Moon to be more precise) in Taurus is upon us. I've assembled this playlist with the theme of "sensual Earth" in mind. Don't ask me to define that further please. Enjoy after the cut!

Soundtrack Through The Arcana - The Tower

Wow it's been awhile since I've done one of these! I haven't given up on the series, I've just not put any real pressure on myself to do it at any set pace. This is a "when I feel like it" sorta thing! So here I am, feeling like jumping into the 17th installment of this series; The Tower.

I've picked what I guess might be one of my favourite Sinead O'Connor songs to represent the energy of this card. I've done that because the tower is both strong, but in its fall proves also rather fragile and I suppose that's the feeling that I get when I listen to this track. And, while I think this song is more about the fall out of a love affair rather than the overhaul of institution, the themes remain the same. It's destruction vs. rebirth and overlap and inevitable reckoning of the two.

Deck Preview: The Threads of Fate

If you haven’t already heard about the upcoming Threads of Fate oracle deck (live on kickstarter April 25th), let me be the first to tell you about it. Before I dive in though, please note that I received the cards I’m about to share so that I could spread the word and offer my thoughts. With that being said, everything I’m about to touch on is a true and authentic reflection of my opinion. Also, I don't typically agree to receive something that I suspect I wouldn't like...so there is also that. Back to business now...

The Threads of Fate is the brainchild of Blaire and Brit and while the aesthetic is pretty specific, I would wager if you’re a fan of the Starchild tarot, you’ll be drawn to this deck as well. And even better, if you have the Starchild tarot, I could see this as being a beautiful compliment to any readings performed with it. So, needless to say, there are some spacey similarities, but what the The Threads of Fate does for me anyway, is bring it back full circle. As above; so below - and as much as there are some of those ethereal or otherworldly imagery and vibes, there is also a lot here that is rooted is Earth. Actually, elements play a large role in the underpinning of many of the cards, and I think intuitively working with them, you’ll be able to determine what card occupies which space without so much as referencing the intended meanings.

The Fool-The World: 22 Ways To Experience More Magick

When I was very young, my dad would tell me that magick was real and with it, we could do anything we wanted - if we believed. That sounds pretty out there, but through the years, I've learned that the more I limit this belief, the less magick I experience. And the thing about magick is that it doesn't have to be this monumental occurrence to feel large and vibrant. Magick is simple - consistent - easy, and its application, while seemingly mundane, can transform your life in the most incredible ways.

Below is a list of some of my favourite ways to add a dose of magick to the everyday according to each of the Major Arcana. I love following this path as a template to explore other areas of life because each step is so deeply archetypal and symbolic. The wisdom extends beyond the cards themselves and if you listen, you'll find their influence can be perceived almost anywhere.

BUT WAIT! Before we get started, I have a side-bar exercise you can do in conjunction with this list. If you like, think of one card from the Major Arcana or, shuffle those 22 cards and draw one card. Consider this your focus card and with it, you will pay extra attention to the suggestion on the list that's coming up. Perhaps this is a way you can infuse more magick, or something you've been neglecting or a possibility you've not considered. Hopefully whatever it is, it serves you well.

Flexing Your Cards - An Exercise in Adaptation

P.S. This post has been updated to include a more complete worksheet. All links to the older worksheet have updated below to include the new material.

This post includes a downloadable resource: Flexing Your Cards - Exercise Sheet.

No, this isn't a post about how to get the most of your workout routine with the aid of tarot - though I'm sure it wouldn't be above their ability to assist with this either! When I talk about flexing, what I'm describing is a method of reading that allows you to bend and mold the card's standard meaning to fit the specific question being asked. Whether it be love, career, personal development, passion projects or anything else, a single tarot card can and should be able to provide suitable guidance, if you can adjust your lens ever so slightly.

Of course, there are some cards that seem to speak fluent love or finances, but even if not; even if the card seems to be themed in an entirely different direction, doesn't mean it can't give you the answer you're looking for. You just need to know how to look at the card.

Weighing Pros & Cons with Tarot

The other day, I was playing around with my method for reading probability, when I found myself asking not if something would or wouldn't happen, but what the pros and cons would be, should it occur. In that moment, I began contemplating methods to simply construct a spread that would tackle this sort of inquiry, and that was when this method for weighing pros and cons was born. It is inspired both by my "yes/no/maybe so" system and decision making method for reading the cards.

The idea behind weighing the pros and cons is that with most of what we experience and pursue in life, there are ups and downs. Sometimes those ups and downs are of equal impact, and many times the situation skews one way or another. If you're trying to determine the ups and downs or pros and cons or something, whether that be embarking on a new path, leaving a current relationship or having a difficult conversation - keep reading; this method is for you.

King Billy and the Royal Road - The Fool's Journey Through a Child's Eyes

Part of understanding tarot for me, is taking the cards and looking at them through different lenses. Whether that be various correspondences, associations or just applying their energy through another form altogether - music, for example.

The process of doing this inevitably expands my personal understanding of the card and also helps to find real examples of it in everyday life. King Billy and the Royal Road, written by RC Ajuonuma and published by Silverwood Books is a piece of creative art that does just that. It is this beautiful and unique translation of the Major Arcana, in a way you've not seen it yet.

Making Picture Magick

I get asked every now and then for photo taking tips or about my process. I am always happy to answer these questions, but I thought it might also be fun to write a little post about how I transform the objects I love into pleasing photos for either this website or my Instagram. And while that may sound superficial, the fact is that taking photos to me is both a sacred and creative act. The energy and love that goes into the process of taking something I adore and capturing its essence, is every bit as spiritual as sitting with that object in other respects. It is both artistic and expressive, not to mention a satisfying outlet.

Quick Disclaimer: I am not a professional photographer (duh) and I have had no training in this field, so I'm not a subject matter expert. These are simply techniques that I utilize, found through trial and error, that you too may find helpful. However, I did work in a photo lab for a few years, many years ago, and colour correction did become a bit of an obsession. Fun fact: I still have nightmares about it!

Oh, and one more thing, in case you're wondering, I use my camera phone for all photos. Most were taken with a Google Nexus 6P, but I've recently upgraded to a Google Pixel 2 XL.

Okay, on to the tips!

Embracing The World: A Tarot Spread

When we arrive at The World, we’re coming full circle. Similar to the card’s traditional imagery, arriving at this state is much like closing the loop on the Major Arcana, encompassing all its lessons and learnings, and reaching a sense of completion orsuccess. It carries sentiments which mimic The Magician in some ways, with the elements present again. But, rather than laying on the table in front of us, they have been assimilated and now take a more lively form; a water bearer (Aquarius) to represent water, an eagle to represent Air, a lion to represent fire and a bull to represent Earth. These essences now all live within the seeker who remains naked, like the 2 cards which precede her, through draped in an elegant scarf and handling two batons. She is both poised and balanced; no longer commanding heaven and Earth, but rather one with them.

Decision Making With Tarot

Tarot is such a versatile tool. My use of the cards is hardly limited to divination and even within the confines of divination as an approach, there are still so many practical applications. Today, I'm going to break down the different ways you can use tarot to help make decisions.

Before we get into techniques, I want to share with you a few instances where I've been able to navigate different life situations to arrive at a desired outcome. One of my first experiences with tarot as a decision making tool, was when I was house hunting. The market was (still is, really) a seller's game and options seemed not only limited, but not ideal. In a series of readings that spanned a couple of hours, we explored many different possibilities, all looking dismal, until we arrived at the one - the one we ultimately went for and couldn't be happier with. I write more about this experience on another blog post, if you want to read more!
While this was a major decision, I've also used tarot to help me make decisions where selling my home was concerned, making changes to my spiritual business and helping me navigate certain dealings with our builder. Yes, tarot has basically helped me navigate every part of buying and selling a home!

The High Priestess & Justice: Two Side of the Same Coin

Preface: If you've found this article (or others) helpful, or have enjoyed the resources that I create, please consider joining me on Patreon. Even at $1 a month you are helping me sustain my work here while also unlocking access to content that has never been and will never be published in this space. Thanks!

Full disclosure - I am of the camp that believes Justice has found it's proper place as the 11th Arcana, though I know there are many who prefer it as the 8th and I am sure there are plenty of valid reasons why that makes sense. However, I'm here to discuss one of the reasons why the latter resonates more with me, and that is because in the 11th spot, based on numerology, it vibrates in line with The High Priestess.

While on the surface, Justice and The High Priestess appear to have little in common, I actually consider these cards to be two sides of the same coin and the secret to reading the tarot. A bit of a bold claim I suppose, but stay with me and we'll get to that...before we do though, let's explore the visual similarities and differences.
