Death & Knight of Cups
Death & Knight of Cups
Analysis:
White horses are depicted in both cards, perhaps a symbol of purity and the employment of right will.
Both of the horses have a similar posture with one leg up and the other down. They are the only two horses in the deck which hold themselves in this way. They are also both facing to the right.
There are mountains or cliffs in the background of each scene.
There is a similar looking, yellow ground in each scene.
There are clear similarities between each of the riders i.e. their armor, posture, one hand on the saddle the other holding onto something else, the helmet, the feather on their helmet etc.
Water is an important feature in each card. Some of this is visual and some implied.
Both The Knight and Death feature bodies of water.
The Knight holds a cup.
Each card is governed by the element of water i.e. cups are associated with the Water element and Death is ruled by Scorpio, which is a water sign.
Death is associated with the Hebrew letter Nun, which means “fish”. This connects back to the water theme, but also visually, as the Knight of Cups has fish on their armor cover.

Possible Interpretation:
The Knight of Cups is on a mission - they are going after their own holy grail, whatever that may be. That mission is something they carry in their heart, a part of their greatest desire and highest calling. They are compelled by this urge to pursue this thing, and that desire is pure. And, in the pursuit of what is calling them, they may experience some ups and downs, or even have to let go of some things along the way. Those things may be outdated mentalities, ways of being, relationships or otherwise. The interplay of these two cards looks very alchemical - very transformative. When we go after what we truly want, we inevitably invite change. We ask that all the walls that stand between where we are, and what we want, be torn down. The process may not be pretty, but the outcome will be worth it.
