Even if we don’t totally know our own shadow, we are at least aware enough to acknowledge that it exists and expresses itself in numerous ways. As such, there are also many ways that we can begin to engage with it. This exercise is one way, but there are many others that you may find complement this work. We’ve included some suggestions in a list below.

Some ways to engage with the shadow include…

  • Reflection.

  • Therapy or counseling.

  • Talking with trusted sources. 

  • Examining your dreams.

  • Journaling and creative writing.

  • Meditation.

  • Self-inquiry/introspection/mindfulness and awareness.

  • Ritual.

  • Divination.

  • Following/exploring your resistances, impulses and judgements.

  • Any other form of creative expression.
