Shadow work is many things, but we would like to highlight a few things to be cautious of as you explore these concepts.

Shadow work is not…

  • An opportunity to point out other people’s shadow sides or “projections”, especially unsolicited.

  • An excuse to recklessly express shadow elements in the name of “liberation”.

  • For everyone, all of the time. We are all different and balance is key.

  • An exercise intended to banish, abolish or destroy the shadow. Integration is the goal.

  • A “one and done” endeavor. Shadow work is ongoing. Even after an intensive exploration, there will still be opportunities to reflect, learn and grown.

  • An invitation to be hyper-critical or cruel toward yourself. Compassion, acceptance, forgiveness and grace are important qualities to foster through this exploration.

  • Something that makes you righteous or superior. We consider shadow work a humble responsibility and a privilege.

  • Enlightenment. It can certainly bring more light and clarity to your world, but it’s not likely a final-destination.
